ROOFING SERVICES
WORKINGTON

Workington is a coastal town, and its roofs take a harder beating than most. Wind-driven rain off the Irish Sea, salt-laden air and open westerly aspects mean roofs here fail earlier and fail in ways tha tinland roofs do not. Much of the town's housing is Victorian and Edwardian terraced property built to serve the old steel and port industries, with newer estates around the edges

Coastal exposure and what it does to roofs
The single biggest factor in Workington roofing is the weather. Exposed coastal positions drive rain horizontally into places an inland roof never has to defend — under the edges of slates, around chimney stacks, behind flashings and into the joints of mortar fillets. Salt in the air accelerates corrosion of the fixings, flashings and gutter brackets that hold everything together. The practical effect is that mortar fillets crack earlier, flashings fail sooner, and nails and clips rust through years before the slates themselves wear out. That is why storm damage is the most common reason we are called to Workington.
Terraced housing and shared roofs
Workington's older streets are largely Victorian and Edwardian terraces, close to the town centre and uptowards Harrington Road, Moss Bay and the surrounding grid. Terraced roofs bring their own complications:a roof is rarely isolated, so water entering at one property can emerge in the neighbour's ceiling. Where work affects a shared roof or party structure, adjoining owners may need to be involved, and we will flag that early rather than discover it mid-job.
