A town of protected buildings
Brampton's conservation area takes in the historic core, and the town has a high proportion of listed buildings within it — a mix of houses, shops, civic buildings and structures that includes buildings at the highest grades of listing. The Moot Hall, the octagonal market building of 1817 at the centre of the town, and St Martin's Church are among the best known. What this means practically is that a large share of the roofs we work on in Brampton are on buildings where materials and methods are constrained.

Stone-built properties and stone walls
Most of Brampton's older properties are stone-built. Stone walls behave differently from brick: they are more sensitive to water being trapped against them, and the detailing that keeps them dry — correct flashing, sound mortar fillets, gutters with proper falls and critically, ventilation in the roof space matters more. A roof that looks sound from the ground can still be quietly soaking the wall below it if the flashings are failing or the roof space cannot breathe.

Border weather
Brampton sits close to the Scottish border and takes weather from the west and north with little shelter. That means the same pattern we see across our exposed areas: flashings and mortar fillets failing before the slates do, and gutters losing their falls under the weight of debris and ice. On the older town roofs, where slate is often original, the covering may outlast several rounds of flashing repair.
