WIGTON

Wigton is a small market town serving a wide rural area north-west of Carlisle, and the work we do here reflects that. Roughly half of it is town housing on established streets; the rest is agricultural and rural property — farms, barns, outbuildings and conversions spread across the surrounding parishes.

A compact market town
Wigton's centre is small and largely historic, with a concentration of listed buildings on and around the main streets. As with Cumbria's other market towns, the older properties are stone-built with slate roofs, and the materials and detailing are what make the town look the way it does. Repairs on these properties need to respect that. Around the centre, the housing is a familiar mix of Victorian and Edwardian terraces and later twentieth-century estates with tiled roofs.

Rural, agricultural and conversion properties
This is where Wigton differs from the other towns in our service area. The surrounding countryside has a large number of working farm buildings, agricultural sheds, stables and outbuildings, along with converted barns that are now homes to a high standard. These properties present roofing problems the town properties simply do not: very long roof runs with extensive gutter and valley runs, low-pitch roofs on agricultural buildings, large quantities of unsupported flashing, and buildings where the internal use is sensitive to any water ingress at all. Barn conversions are often the most demanding — the roof is usually the last original element left, and it is expected to perform like a modern roof while looking like a traditional one.

Tile roofing and repairs on twentieth-century housing
Agricultural and outbuilding roof repairs, including large roof runs
