Whitehaven is one of the most distinctive towns in our service area. It was laid out as a planned Georgian town on a grid, and it is often described as the most complete surviving example of that kind of town building in Britain. For anyone working on its roofs, that history is not background detail — it dictates what can and cannot be done
A Georgian planned town
The town was laid out in the eighteenth century on a grid system, and the result is unusual consistency: long terraces and street frontages built to a shared pattern, with slate roofs, regular chimney stacks and a strong repeat of detail. That consistency is the point — it is what makes Whitehaven look like a single piece of work rather than a town that grew by accident. It also means any roof that is repaired with the wrong materials, or in a different style, stands out immediately against its neighbours.
Conservation area and Article 4 Directions.
Whitehaven's town centre conservation area covers a large part of the historic grid and contains a substantial number of listed buildings. Importantly, Article 4 Directions are in force in parts of it. An Article 4 Direction removes some of the permitted development rights that would normally let you alter a property without planning permission. In practice that can mean work you would not need consent for elsewhere —changing a roof covering, adding a dormer or rooflight, altering the frontage does require permission here. Do not assume a like-for-like change is exempt.
WHITEHAVEN faces the sea directly, and the harbour and cliffs give it a genuinely exposed aspect. As in nearby Workington, the combination of driving rain and salt in the air attacks flashings, fixings and mortar before it attacks the slate itself. On the Georgian terraces, that shows up most often as failed chimney flashings, perished mortar fillets and gutters whose falls have been lost.
What we do in Whitehaven:
Slate roofing, repairs and re-slating on Georgian terraces
Reclaimed and matching slate sourcing for historic roofs
Chimney works, repointing and lead flashings
Flat roofing for rear extensions, garages and commercial premises
Storm damage repairs and coastal weatherproofing
Gutter maintenance, clearance and re-setting falls
UPVC roofline and fascia work where permitted
