ROOFING SERVICES
CARLISLE

Carlisle is the largest urban centre in our service area, and the town we work in most often. Its housing is unusually varied for a city of its size: sandstone Georgian and Victorian terraces close to the centre, interwar and post-war estates on the outskirts, and stone-built farmhouses and steadings within a few miles of the ring road. Each of those roof types is built differently and needs to be repaired differently. The city's building stock, Carlisle's centre retains a dense grid of Georgian and Victorian streets, with slate roofs, bay windows, dormers and rear extensions that were originally built with flat or shallow-pitched roofs. Those rear roofs and the parapet gutters that run between terraces are where most leaks we are called to start. Further out, the housing is largely twentieth-century: interwar semis with tiled roofs and post-war estates with a mix of tile and flat roof sections over garages and extensions.

Conservation areas and listed buildings
Cumberland Council records 19 conservation areas and over 1,500 listed buildings in the Carlisle area, with a large concentration in the city centre. That has a direct effect on how roofing work is carried out. Replacing a roof covering in a conservation area often needs planning permission, and work on a listed building normally needs listed building consent even where you are only repairing. Materials usually have to match what is already there, which on older Carlisle roofs means like-for-like slate rather than a modern substitute
