Haltwhistle is the northern most town we cover and the only one in Northumberland. It is a small town in open border country, close to Hadrian's Wall, and the roofing work here is shaped by two things: a compact historic centre, and a lot of exposed rural property around it.

A compact historic centre
Haltwhistle's conservation area was designated in 1993 and covers the older part of the town, with a concentration of listed buildings including the Church of the Holy Cross — the oldest building in the town, parts of which date back centuries. The centre is small, walkable and largely stone-built with slate roofs. Because the town is small, its historic core is compact: the proportion of protected buildings within a few minutes' walk of the market square is high, and roofing work there is more likely than average to involve materials matching and consent questions.
Hadrian's Wall country and rural property
Around Haltwhistle the landscape opens out: farms, steadings, cottages and converted agricultural buildings with Hadrian's Wall and the surrounding Hadrian's Wall corridor just to the north. Properties here are genuinely exposed — high, open, with long uninterrupted roof runs and little shelter from wind. As across all of our rural areas, that means the flashings, fillets, fixings and gutters fail before the slate does and long roofs need planned inspection rather than leak-driven repair.

A different council area
Haltwhistle falls under Northumberland County Council rather than Cumberland Council, so planning and conservation matters go through a different authority from the rest of our service area. Haltwhistle is also at the outer edge of our coverage, so we plan visits to the town and the surrounding area together. If the weather makes travel difficult, as it can on these roads in winter, we will tell you rather than leave you waiting.
